Closer look into the rap

The first people to settle on the Italian peninsula where the Latins. The Etruscans followed after and then the Greeks settled in Italy. Tarquin the Proud was the first tyrant of Rome. He was thrown out of power after his son attacked and raped a woman and received no punishment. The Romans then set up a republic, where the common people (plebeians) ran the assembly and the aristocrats (patricians) ran the senate. There was also two consuls that acted as the executive branch and had power over all of the government. The also had the power to veto each other. The legion acted as the army and police of Rome. During the Punic Wars, Rome fought a series of wars against Carthage. Hannibal, the leader of Carthage, led his troops across the Pyrenees mountains and the Alps to make a daring attack on Rome. They destroyed the Roman countryside but never got close to Rome itself. Carthage eventually would be defeated when the Roman forces turned around and laid waste to Carthage.
