1. republic- Rome was a republic, which guaranteed voting rights for all free-born males.
patrician- wealthy landowners who held most of the power
plebian- the common folk, who had the majority in population
tribune- protected plebian rights from unfair patrician rule
consul- 2 groups of elected officials that lead Rome. Both had equal power and could veto each other
senate- Legislative branch of 300 aristocrats
dictator- a six month leader who had absolute power to make laws and rule the army
legion- a group of 5,000 infantry men supported by a Calvary division
Punic Wars- a struggle between Rome and Carthage from 264-146 B.C that allowed Rome to conquer most of the Mediterranean.
Hannibal- Leader of Carthage who ruled during the Second Punic War to avenge Carthage
